Zone Diet Tips on Zone Rules to stay in the Zone

  • Eat a Zone Diet meal or Zone snack within one hour after waking-up.

  • Eat a Zone snack 30 minutes before exercise.  A typical Zone snack contains one Zone Diet block (about 1 oz.) of protein for both men and women.

  • Eat every 4 - 6 hours after a zone diet meal or 2 - 3 hours after a zone snack, whether you are hungry or not, to stay in the Zone.  The best time to eat is when you aren't hungry and the insulin levels are stabilized.

  • Before every zone diet meal and zone snack always assess your hunger and mental focus since these are excellent barometers in the Zone Diet Program.

  • Every zone diet meal and zone snack starts with low fat protein.  Next add low glycemic load carbohydrates while reducing high glycemic load carbohydrates.  Finally add some good fats i.e. olive oil.

  • A typical serving size of low fat protein fits into the palm of your hand and is no thicker than your hand.  For most females, this is 3 Zone blocks (approximately 3 oz.) of low-fat protein, and for males, this equals 4 Zone blocks (approximately 4 oz.)  of low-fat protein.

  •  When it comes to low glycemic load carbohydrates, there is no need to measure, since it is difficult to over-consume vegetables and fruits. Simply divide your plate in three equal sections. Add the protein portion and fill the remaining two-thirds of the plate with low glycemic load vegetables and fruits. To top it all, add a small amount of fat e.g. olive oil or include a small salad at dinnertime.

  • Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day.

  • Living and staying on the Zone Diet is guilt-free.  If you make a mistake, do not worry because your next Zone Diet meal or Zone snack will bring you right  back to the Zone.
